“A musical journey through the world of cinema”
Yesterday’s performance of the Thessaloniki State Orchestra, in the concert CINEMA PARADISO, held for the 58th Thessaloniki International Cinema Festival in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, ferried the audience into the magical world of the “seventh art” with the beautiful melodies by Manos Hadjidakis (the “Sweet Suite”, orchestrated by Nikos Kypourgos), Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone.
In the hall – which was packed full – many scenes from legendary movies, among which “Never on Sunday”, “America, America”, “La Dolce Vita”, “The Godfather”, “Once Upon a Time in America” and “La Strada” were evoked.
On the podium was the Italian conductor Gioele Muglialdo, one of the greatest experts in film music. For the occasion, the symphony orchestra was supplemented by a trio of soloists: mandolin, guitar and accordion.
After performing the “Sweet Suite”, Maestro Muglialdo called on the podium the composer Nikos Kypourgos who, after thanking him and the audience, pointed to the sky and said the applause ought to be dedicated to Manos Hadjidakis, the ‘true’ creator of those immortal melodies (in 1960 he won an Oscar for best soundtrack with the film “Never on Sunday” directed by Jules Dassin).
At the end of the concert, Maestro Muglialdo (who had as many as 8 curtain calls and who, by popular demand, gave an encore of “The Godfather”) said: «Good evening to you all! I am thrilled to have conducted this concert of works by Greek and Italian composers, and honoured to have had the opportunity to meet a great musician such as Nikos Kypourgos».
Nikos Kypourgós declared: «It was very exciting for me, because this Suite had never been performed live before now. It has been recorded, but never played in concert. Today it has given me great pleasure to listen to it, “experience” it in this ideal context, with this fantastic orchestra and this excellent conductor, whom I already have become friends with.»
